Environmental Impact Study (AIA) in progress

Date: 18/03/2023

The ‘Central Fotovoltaica Estoi’, as it is refered to officially is now in the Environmental Impact Assessment (AIA) phase, process number 3621, as anounced on the APA (Portuguese Environment Agency) website:

https://siaia.apambiente.pt/AIA1.aspx?ID=3621

Unfortunately, the location information that should be included here, is currently missing, despite PROBAAL’s requests to instate it.

After waiting two years for this information to become public, we hope that the Portuguese Environment Agency will fullfil their duty as soon as possible

Land renters receive Iberdrola payouts

Recent corespondance with the Portuguese environment agency, confirms that there is still not an offical project registered with them for the Iberdola S.A. solar project in Tavria – However, PROBAAL has heard that land owners who have rented land for the solar ‘non-project’ are currently receiving their first payments relating to the contracts they have signed.

The fact that contracts are being paid, in spite of no official project registered or an environmental impact study having yet been undertaken – seems to us a rather backwards way to proceed with a project with could have such devastating effects for nature.

Appropriate siting of Solar panels

PROBAAL is very happy to see the placing of solar panels on the car park shading at the new Continente supermarket in S.Bras de Alportel.

Small but positive steps like this encourage us personally, and clearly demonstrate for all to see, that sustainable solar installations are possible.

When suitable sites for solar panels are identified and implemented like this, it spares a natural area of the same size. Every little helps!

The destruction of large areas of wild or verdant land is not justifiable when the are good solutions so readily available. Governments and policy makers need to move towards making this the norm for suitable new buildings and to direct renewable energy swiftly in this direction.

‘Ecocide’ to be defined as a crime

Defined as ‘wanton or unlawful acts, committed in the knowledge that there is a high chance that they would cause severe and either widespread or long-term damage to the environment’ – establishing laws prohibiting Ecocide, could help in the defence of the natural world.

Change.org petition gains over 2000 signatures

”We the undersigned, petition the Ministers, the APA/AHR Algarve, The Direcção-Geral de Energia e Geologia and the Municípios de Câmara of Tavira, São Brás de Alportel and Olhão – against the placement of a solar power plant on sensitive land in the East Algarve, Portugal :

We respectfully call for a proper public consultation process regarding implementation of solar projects.

We request a four seasons environmental impact study, including hydrological survey of water impacts.

We ask the location of solar projects to be on land that is already denatured, with no additional sensitive or virgin areas destroyed.
